The reason behind the move is that Twitter wants to resemble a thread like Reddit, where the conversation is very clear. The replies which are given from the original tweeter will be displayed in grey colour and the ones that come from the people you follow will appear in blue. Also, Twitter is reportedly experimenting in order to de-emphasise engagement numbers.

With this change, likes and retweets will be discreet. Until a user clicks on the reply, they will not be able to see them. Also, there have been reports that messages on Twitter are not being deleted once you delete them. Twitter has been storing all the DMs that are as old as twelve months. Also, you will be able to access these messages by downloading archived data from your account. Twitter is aware of the issue and it reportedly said that the company has scrutinised the issue thoroughly. Another major highlight related to Twitter is that, the microblogging site is testing a new feature called Profile Preview. This will help users to keep track of their conversations in long threads. If somebody you don’t know tweets in a thread in which you have participated, you cannot know about their description unless you are taken to the site. What Profile Preview would do exactly is that once you press on the person’s profile link, their profile bio will pop up in the same Twitter window instead of taking you to their profile page. That way you would be able to see people’s description within the same window and stay connected with the rest of the conversation.
